On Sunday, it was revealed that Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer and is currently mulling his treatment options. Although I have been harshly critical of the former president, I—like my colleague Ward Clark who reported on the story earlier—would never wish cancer on anyone. Those who have been affected by it or had it themselves know it’s a painful journey at best and potentially deadly at worst.
Although the partisan divide in this country has grown extreme and politicians routinely accuse each other of being Nazis and racists and all sorts of nasty things, most reactions that I’ve seen from leaders have been classy, as they should be in this moment.
Biden’s main political rival Donald Trump weighed in:

His message was simple but heartfelt:
Melania and I are saddened to hear about Joe Biden’s recent medical diagnosis. We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery.
The president’s eldest son Don Jr. also extended his well wishes, writing “agreed 100%” on a post that said, “Politics aside, we wish him a speedy recovery.”

Although relations grew strained between the former president and his VP Kamala Harris after he was forced to step down from his reelection bid, she and her husband Doug Emhoff offered their prayers on social media:
Doug and I are saddened to learn of President Biden’s prostate cancer diagnosis. We are keeping him, Dr. Biden, and their entire family in our hearts and prayers during this time. Joe is a fighter — and I know he will face this challenge with the same strength, resilience, and optimism that have always defined his life and leadership. We are hopeful for a full and speedy recovery.
Television personality Meghan McCain, who lost her father, the late Arizona Sen. John McCain, to brain cancer, knows how awful it can be:
Cancer is the absolute worst. It is hell.
It is incredibly difficult for any family, anywhere that has to deal with it.
Wishing nothing but healing, prayers, light and strength to President Biden and his family.
I don’t believe times like these are appropriate for politics.

There were many other messages to the ailing former president, including from Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who wrote: “Jeanette and I are united in prayer for the Biden Family during this difficult time.” Former President Barack Obama said, “Michelle and I are thinking of the entire Biden family. Nobody has done more to find breakthrough treatments for cancer in all its forms than Joe, and I am certain he will fight this challenge with his trademark resolve and grace. We pray for a fast and full recovery.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), meanwhile, who’s been busy trying to negotiate the “big beautiful bill,” sent best wishes from his family. “This is certainly sad news,” he wrote, “and the Johnson family will be joining the countless others who are praying for the former President in the wake of his diagnosis.”
Ronald Reagan’s son Michael offered “prayer hands” emojis.
Although there are many on the internet who believe the timing of this announcement is suspect, given that several deeply unflattering books have come out about Biden and the cover-up of his mental faculties while he was president, I applaud leaders for putting aside their political differences, at least for the moment.
