Of cabbages and Nazis: Reverberations

In “Of cabbages and Nazis” I criticized Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s utterly inappropriate commencement address at the University of Minnesota Law School over the weekend. I also criticized the Jewish Community Relations Council for remaining silent on Walz’s offenses when it had condemned Republican gubernatorial candidate for what I deemed a mythical offense in 2022.

Steve Hunegs is my friend and executive director of the Jewish Community Relations Council. He has now called on Walz to “walk back Gestapo language” while wrapping his request in fawning praise:

“The governor, among Minnesota elected officials, is singularly knowledgeable about the Holocaust,” Steve Hunegs, the executive director of the regional chapter of the JCRC, told TC Jewfolk. “He knows the importance of careful language when referring to the Holocaust and the perpetrators of the Holocaust.

“We share the governor’s concern about due process for all. But loose language undermines what we’re trying to accomplish with Holocaust education. The governor should walk back ‘Gestapo’ language from his commencement address.”

I’m sure Steve wants to stay on Walz’s good side. It’s part of his job. However, that is not a statement to be proud of. As I pointed out yesterday, Walz is a repeat offender and the JCRC held its tongue the first time around. I find the ever-so-humble form of this request repulsive under the circumstances.

President Trump’s Department of Homeland Security has it right. DHS does not feel compelled to submit itself to Walz on bended knee while speaking up forthrightly for its officers.
