Ever since Star Tribune reporter Paul Walsh all but accused me of racism for asking him about German Adriano Llangari Inga’s immigration status, we have closely followed his case. Walsh’s discouragement to the contrary notwithstanding, I followed up with ICE myself and received this response on the afternoon of May 10:
U. S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement placed a detainer on German Llangari Inga, 35, of Ecuador, with the Hennepin County Jail, Minnesota, Aug. 4, 2024, after he was arrested for criminal vehicular homicide. The Hennepin County Jail did not honor the detainer and released Llangari without notification to ICE Aug. 6, 2024, and he remains at large. Llangari initially entered the United States in June 2016, was detained by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, issued an order of expedited removal and placed into removal proceedings.
Llangari Inga is the drunk driver who killed Victoria Eileen Harwell in a head-on collision last year. The local authorities only got around to charging him this month, which occasioned the Star Tribune story that prompted my inquiry to Walsh. At that time Llangari Inga was on the loose. The local authorities eventually found him at home. They arrested, charged, and released him on a $100,000 bail bond.
ICE has now arrested Llangari Inga, taken him into custody, and remitted him to a county jail in southern Minnesota. I would guess a one-way ticket to Ecuador awaits him.
This must all come as a great shock to readers who get their news from the Star Tribune or from the ravings of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. Walsh himself breaks the news to readers here. We haven’t reached out to Governor Walz for comment, but readers can turn to his remarks at the University of Minnesota Law School commencement this past Saturday to get an idea.
