King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain, were to receive His Majesty the Sultan of Oman, Haitham bin Tariq, in Spain for a state visit on May 20, which has now been cancelled. The cancellation is due to the death of the Sultan’s mother-in-law on Monday afternoon, and the sad news was also confirmed by the Oman Royal Family on Instagram.

The Sultan of Oman has had to postpone his state visit to Spain, and a new date has not yet been announced. The visit aimed to deepen ties between Oman and Spain, featuring a formal reception at Madrid’s Royal Palace, a meeting at La Zarzuela Palace, and a gala dinner hosted by King Felipe and Queen Letizia.

King Felipe VI of Spain and His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik exchanged views on regional and international issues of common interest during a phone call on October 8, 2024.

Additionally, former King Juan Carlos I of Spain made several visits to Oman, the latest in 2014, which saw the signing of multiple agreements and memoranda of understanding across various sectors.

Oman and Spain share collaborative efforts in numerous sectors to enhance economic and investment cooperation.

Ahead of the visit, Thamer bin Fayez Al Alawi, Oman’s Ambassador to Spain, stated: “This historic visit reflects the depth and strength of the close friendship between our two nations. The meeting of the two leaders will serve as a powerful catalyst to elevate the strategic partnership that has existed since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1972 to broader horizons across all fields.”
