Consent of the governed | Power Line

How is this classified as bad news? From Long Island’s Newsday,

The [U.S.] Justice Department announced Wednesday it was canceling proposed consent decrees reached with Minneapolis and Louisville to implement policing reforms in the wake of the killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.

Newsday continues,

The decision to unwind the investigations is a major reversal from the Biden administration, which had aggressively used the investigations and decrees to push reforms at police departments it accused of civil rights violations.

In Minnesota, the news that the Feds were discontinuing the micromanagement of the city’s policing was greeted as a devastating setback. Democrats representing Minneapolis at every level of government decried the move. The reaction of U.S. Sen. Tina Smith was typical. She writes,

It’s especially painful that this decision comes on the eve of the fifth anniversary of George Floyd’s murder — the very tragedy that sparked this investigation and the urgent push for reform.

The city’s Mayor and the entire city council are either Democrats or socialists, or both. The city is now free to enact whatever police “reforms” they wish, with no interference from the Federal government. What’s stopping them?

One impediment would be that credit, or blame, for any police “reform” and the resulting consequences would fall directly on local Democrats.
