IT IS remarkable that Signor Mussolini, the apostle of force, should be a feminist. Yet | a political feminist he certainly is, and if his present Bill only admits Italian women to the local government franchise his principles must, if he remain in power, carry him the whole way. Female suffrage in Italy, even if for the time it is restricted to municipal elections, will be another heavy blow to the Masonic and anti-clerical forces in the Italian peninsula. In every European country it is the female voter who will save Christian civilization from its foes. There was, however, an alarming note in Signor Mussolini’s speech. He gave as an argument for the vote that in the next war the State will expect military service of some kind from its women citizens. This looks as if the Dictator expects a war. His Government is a revolutionary Government, and revolutionary Governments, whether they are Fascist or Bolshevist, are likely to be attracted or impelled to military adventures. War in Morocco is the French Government’s latest trouble. France is weary of war and disturbed by the regular appearances again of the ominous communiqué officiel. It is suggested that the truth is not being fully told, and that the situation in Morocco is far worse than the Government admits. France assuredly has no money for “little wars” with her bills for the great war still unpaid.
