Brits visiting Italy issued fresh travel alert – 3 things you need to have | World | News

UK tourists planning to drive in Italy are being reminded of the mandatory safety equipment required by law, as enforcement has become stricter. According to Show Plates World, a leading motoring expert, Italian authorities are actively checking vehicles to ensure compliance, and failure to carry the required items can lead to huge fines and other complications which could ruin your holiday entirely.

If you are stopped by the police and don’t have any of these mandatory items, you risk being fined on the spot. But not only this, having these items is a key part of ensuring your safety and the safety of others while on the road. In some cases, police may also require you to purchase the missing items immediately before continuing your journey.

Italian law mandates that all drivers must carry:

  • A warning triangle to place on the road if your vehicle breaks down or is involved in an accident. This alerts other drivers to a hazard ahead, preventing further collisions.

  • A high-visibility safety vest which must be worn by anyone exiting their vehicle on a road or motorway, day or night, to make them visible to other road users.

  • Headlamp beam deflectors are required for UK vehicles (right-hand drive cars) to prevent your headlights from dazzling oncoming traffic, which drives on the right.

Show Plates World warns: “These items are essential because they protect both you and other road users. For example, a warning triangle gives drivers enough time to slow down, preventing accidents.

“The safety vest makes sure you’re clearly visible if you need to get out on the roadside. Beam deflectors help avoid dangerous glare, especially at night.”

Fines for missing the warning triangle or safety vest typically range from approximately €41 (£34) to €168 (£140), depending on the region and circumstances.

The warning adds: “Besides the fines, not having this equipment can seriously delay your trip and cause stress. Italian police take these rules seriously because they are designed to prevent accidents and keep everyone safe.”

These items aren’t just bureaucratic requirements, they are proven safety measures. Italy’s winding mountain roads, busy city streets, and fast highways pose unique hazards.

A warning triangle and vest can save lives by reducing the risk of secondary accidents involving stopped vehicles.

Beam deflectors ensure you don’t accidentally blind oncoming drivers, which can cause dangerous crashes.

Before travelling, make sure to double-check your vehicle to ensure all mandatory safety items are onboard.

Not only does this avoid fines, but it ensures you are fully prepared to handle roadside emergencies safely and efficiently.

The advice continues: “Preparation is your best defence against unexpected problems abroad. Bring your warning triangle, high-vis vest and beam deflectors — they’re small items that make a big difference in safety and peace of mind.”
