A collection of CCTV images has revealed the final moments of the car that was driven into pedestrians at Liverpool FC’s parade. They show a Ford Galaxy car moving through Liverpool city centre before hitting pedestrians celebrating the club’s Premier League victory.
The horrific incident, which left a total of 79 people injured, happened in Water Street on Monday evening. The footage, put together by our sister title the Liverpool Echo shows the car emerging onto Dale Street at its eastern-most point, close to the Queensway Tunnel. The Ford Galaxy is seen in this area at 5.56pm.
We can then see the vehicle as it continues to pass along Dale Street. It is seen near the junction of Dale Street and Cumberland Street at 5.57pm. In this clip Dale Street is busy with both vehicles and pedestrians who are walking back from seeing the parade. At one point the Ford Galaxy appears to nearly collide with a woman who is crossing the road.
Another clip shows the car even further along Dale Street, close to Moorfields Station. In the footage, more people walking in the road can be seen as they walk back from the parade. The Ford Galaxy can then be seen making its way through the crowds of people.
The vehicle continued towards Water Street and crashed into crowds celebrating the Liverpool FC win. A road block had been in place to prevent vehicle access, yet this was temporarily taken away to allow an ambulance through. The Ford Galaxy reportedly followed the ambulance closely which allowed the driver to get past the road block.
Merseyside Police officers are now speaking to more victims after the terrifying ordeal.
A 53-year-old white British man has been arrested in connection with the incident, and detectives have now been given more time to question him on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving offences and driving while unfit through drugs. He has not been charged.
In a statement today, Merseyside Police said: “We can confirm that seven people remain in hospital in a stable condition following the incident on Water Street on Monday, May 26. As part of the ongoing investigation, we have also been able to identify more people who were injured, with 79 in total who we are now speaking with.”
They added: “The investigation team have today (Wednesday, May 28) been granted further time to continue questioning him in police custody, which will remain in place until tomorrow.
“We can also confirm that Water Street has now reopened to vehicles and pedestrians after the police cordon was stood down.”
