Barack Obama’s former physician didn’t mince words in explaining what Joe Biden and the administration should have done to answer the public’s questions about his obviously deteriorating mental health while in office: take a cognitive test.

Republicans for years called on Biden to take such a test because the former president was often pictured staring off into space, wandering off at international events, appearing to get lost on stage, and garbling his sentences so badly you could sometimes barely understand what he was talking about.

It should have been looked into, the former White House doctor admitted in an interview reported Saturday:
A report by White House physician Kevin O’Connor in February 2024 didn’t include any mention of neurocognitive testing for the then-81-year-old Biden. Jeffrey Kuhlman, who held the same job under Obama and has called for cognitive testing for presidents and presidential candidates, said Biden would have benefited from such a test given his age.
“Sometimes those closest to the tree miss the forest,” Kuhlman said of O’Connor, Biden’s physician since 2009.
It’s not the norm for one WH doctor to critique another:
The rare criticism of one White House doctor by another comes as Republicans have increased scrutiny of O’Connor and other former White House aides. House Republicans subpoenaed O’Connor on Thursday, a day after President Donald Trump ordered White House attorneys to determine whether Biden’s inner circle tried to conceal his alleged cognitive decline.
Kuhlman had also noted in 2024 that physicians should be asking about the overall fitness of the presidents, not just mental cognition. As we now know, Biden is suffering from an aggressive form of prostate cancer that his medical team inexplicably missed.
“It shouldn’t be just health, it should be fitness,” Kuhlman said. “Fitness is: Do you have that robust mind, body, spirit that you can do this physically, mentally, emotionally demanding job?”

As we reported, White House officials during Biden’s tenure held heated discussions about whether to have Joe take the test, but they ultimately declined because they realized they simply could not take the risk.

At the same time, Mr. Biden’s longtime doctor, Kevin O’Connor, had told aides he would not take the 81-year-old president’s political standing into consideration when treating him.
Donald Trump, on the other hand, has taken at least two cognitive tests and had no trouble with them.
Trump got his annual physical and made sure to get a cognitive test… unlike Biden.
