Contrary to popular belief, the Democratic mayoral primary in New York City is not the final say in the matter. It appears that four candidates are moving to the general election in November.
The incumbent mayor, Eric Adams, is running for re-election as one of two independents. Curtis Sliwa, the Guardian Angel famous from the 1970’s, is the Republican candidate, Sliwa also ran for mayor in 2021 as a Republican, losing to Adams by a 67-28% margin.
All eyes are on the apparent winner of the Democratic primary: 33-year-old Bowdoin-graduate (Africana studies, not a typo) Zohran Mamdani. He prevailed over his leading opponent, disgraced former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, by a plurality of 43-36%, earning over 432,000 votes. That figure represents less than five percent of the city’s total population approaching 9 million.
Bill Melugin of Fox News summarizes the Mamdani agenda in this post on Twitter (X),
Some of the things socialist NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani has previously called for:
Abolish NYPD – Abolish prisons – Abolish medical bills – Abolish private health insurance – Ban all guns – Legalize sex work – Safe injection sites – End cash bail – Decriminalize drug possession – End sentencing enhancements – End all cooperation with ICE.
Mamdani also wants the government to run grocery stores, and other such idiocies, as a card-carrying socialist.
I mean card-carrying in the literal sense, as Mamdani, a state assemblyman from Queens, is a member of the Democrat Socialists of America, New York City chapter (NYC DSA).
New York City was first founded in 1624 as New Amsterdam by the Dutch. That was more than 400 years ago, and it looks like the city is entering its final days.
We are facing the exact same situation in Minneapolis (founded 1867). Incumbent Democratic mayor Jacob Frey is running for a third term. His main challenger appears to be a local Democratic state senator, Omar Fateh, age 35.
Fateh is backed by the DSA Twin Cities chapter (TC DSA). In the bizarro world of Minneapolis politics, Frey is considered to be the equivalent of a right-wing Republican.
Fateh is more vague about his governing platform than Mamdani, but as I have written before, it won’t be long into a Fateh administration and not one stone within Minneapolis will remain atop another.
To repeat H. L. Mencken,
Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want and deserve to get it good and hard.
