Cuomo to stay in NYC mayor’s race?

From CBS New York,

Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is staying in the New York City mayor’s race, but is debating whether to actively campaign after Zohran Mamdani’s stunning performance in the Democratic primary, sources tell CBS News New York.

The disgraced former governor lost the primary to the 33-year-old, Ugandan-born, state assemblyman Mamdani on Tuesday. But Cuomo noted later in the week,

There are about 5 million voters in New York City. There are about 8 million people in New York City, and about 1 million people vote in the Democratic primary. So, it’s not necessarily representative of the city at large.

Cuomo could play spoiler in what appears to be a four-way race between Democrats Mamdani and Cuomo, Democratic incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, running as an independent, and Guardian Angel Republican Curtis Sliwa.

Mamdani prevailed Tuesday with only 432,000 votes cast in his favor (43.5%)

Or, perhaps Cuomo could rally independents and Republicans to his cause against the far-left radical Mamdani. Speaking of Republicans, there are more than you think in New York, with Sliwa gaining almost 28 percent of the vote (winning Staten Island) when he ran against Adams in 2021.

It’s too early to see any useful polling in a 4-way general election contest. However the earliest efforts show Mamdani prevailing in a three-way Mamdani-Adams-Sliwa race, but losing to Cuomo in a four-way contest.

Anything is possible.
