Elon Musk doubles down on Donald Trump’s ‘big beautiful bill’ as he issues warning to GOP

Elon Musk has launched a scathing attack on President Donald Trump’s ‘big beautiful bill’, warning it will “destroy millions of jobs in America and cause immense strategic harm to our country”.

The billionaire entrepreneur made his opposition clear on social media just hours before the Senate narrowly advanced the bill in a vote.

The Tesla and SpaceX chief executive’s intervention marks a significant escalation in his criticism of the sprawling package that combines tax breaks, spending reductions and increased deportation funding.

The Senate procedurally advanced the package on Saturday night with a 51-49 vote, following more than three hours of negotiations.

Vice President JD Vance was present at the Capitol to potentially break a tie as voting ground to a halt while holdout senators engaged in private discussions away from the chamber floor.

Two Republican senators ultimately joined all Democrats in opposing the motion to proceed, highlighting divisions within the party over the legislation ahead of its July Fourth deadline.

Writing on X, Musk wrote: “The latest Senate draft bill will destroy millions of jobs in America and cause immense strategic harm to our country! Utterly insane and destructive.

“It gives handouts to industries of the past while severely damaging industries of the future.”

Musk subsequently escalated his criticism, posting that the bill would be “political suicide for the Republican Party”.

The US President’s comprehensive tax and spending cuts legislation has sparked backlash from political opponents.

Not all Republican politicians agree with the proposals to reduce spending on Medicaid, food stamps and other programs.

The bill will be used as a way to help cover the cost of extending $3.8trillion (£2.77trillion) in Trump tax breaks.

Following their sudden bust-up, relations between the pair appear to be on the mend

Musk’s public opposition to the legislation persists, following his sudden reversal from his previous role within the Government, where he had been tasked with identifying spending cuts and efficiency improvements prior to his departure from the position.

Earlier this month, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO branded proposals for Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” as a “disgusting abomination”.

He wrote at the time: “This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.”

The pair exchanged blows online, triggering a public rift between the billionaire and the President.

Following the sudden bust-up, relations between the pair appear to be on the mend despite Musk’s continued condemnation of the bill.
