The Republican-controlled United States Senate voted 51-49 Saturday to begin debate on H.R. 1, also known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The vote fell largely along party lines, with all Democrats opposing the measure along with Sens. Rand Paul, R-Ky., and Thom Tillis, R-N.C. The Senate is expected to make several amendments to the bill before voting on its final passage.
Saturday’s vote comes more than a month after the Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives passed its version of the legislation in a 215-214 vote that saw all Democrats oppose the measure along with Reps. Warren Davidson, R-Ohio, and Thomas Massie, R-Ky. At 940 pages of text, the Senate’s version of the bill is shorter than the House’s 1,018-page bill.
Before the bill can reach President Donald Trump’s desk and become law, the two chambers will need to resolve the differences between their respective versions of the legislation.
Here are five provisions of the Big Beautiful Bill, along with their differences between the House and Senate versions of the legislation.
