Pro-life medical experts urge RFK to review FDA’s original approval of abortion pills

WASHINGTON, D.C. (LifeSiteNews) — A coalition of six pro-life medical groups is urging U.S. Health & Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and U.S. Food & Drug Administration administrator Dr. Marty Makary to reconsider the FDA’s original 2000 approval of the abortion pill mifepristone.

Fox News reports that the letter, signed by American Association of Pro-Life OBGYNs, the Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, and the American College of Family Medicine among others, cites recent studies by the Foundation for the Restoration of America and the Ethics and Public Policy Center, which links mifepristone to serious adverse events for as many as one in every nine users, including sepsis, infection, hemorrhaging, and more.

“The data strongly suggest that mifepristone poses a far greater risk of causing harm than previously stated. In fact, the risk of serious complications may be 22 times higher than previously disclosed,” the letter says.

“A basic tenet of medical ethics is informed consent – which requires a review of accurate risks and benefits of any proposed intervention that is specific to the patient sitting in front of us which is based on actual data, not ideologically-driven rhetoric,” the letter states. “Women deserve to know the true risk of serious adverse events and medical emergencies after using mifepristone – no matter how politically charged the discussion surrounding this drug.”

“Americans must be able to trust that no matter what, the FDA will rely on the most robust safety standards before and after approving any drug and that they can have truly informed consent by knowing what the risks to taking FDA-approved drugs are,” the letter adds.

Twelve states currently ban all or most abortions. But the abortion lobby is working feverishly to cancel out those deterrents with a variety of tactics, especially the unregulated, no-oversight distribution of contraceptive and abortion pills across state lines, regardless of the risks to the women they are supposedly serving.

President Donald Trump raised concerns during his election campaign when he said he would not reverse former President Joe Biden’s relaxing of the rules to allow abortion pills to be distributed by mail.

Hope was renewed when Kennedy said in February that Trump asked him to review the pill’s safety and when Makary pledged during his confirmation hearing an objective look at the evidence. Kennedy said in May he has since ordered a “complete review,” which Makary reiterated in June in light of the aforementioned data.
