Pres. Donald Trump Tells Cambodia, Thailand They Must Cease Fire Before More US Trade Talks – RedState

If we know anything about Donald Trump, it’s that he’s always looking for a way to broker a deal and even though he’s taking an overseas trip to, in part, check on his golf properties, that isn’t stopping him from keeping on that track. I’ll share the details on that in a moment.

On Friday and earlier on Saturday, we wrote about the president’s trip to Scotland, during which he is scheduled to meet with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, to shore up the already-signed deal with the close U.S. ally. After landing in Scotland, Pres. Trump issued a stern warning to European leaders on the havoc that illegal immigration could inflict on their countries, if they continue to fail in reining it in.

He meets with the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Sunday on several fronts, partly in hopes of brokering a trade deal with those countries.

On Saturday afternoon, though, Pres. Trump took to his Truth Social account to announce that what you might call a hybrid dealmaking situation is in the works, on a ceasefire between long-warring nations Cambodia and Thailand:

Trump said he first spoke with the Prime Minister of Cambodia:

Just spoke to the Prime Minister of Cambodia relative to stopping the War with Thailand. I am calling the Acting Prime Minister of Thailand, right now, to likewise request a Ceasefire, and END to the War, which is currently raging. We happen to be, by coincidence, currently dealing on Trade with both Countries, but do not want to make any Deal, with either Country, if they are fighting — And I have told them so! The call with Thailand is being made momentarily. The call with Cambodia has ended, but expect to call back regarding War stoppage and Ceasefire based on what Thailand has to say. I am trying to simplify a complex situation! Many people are being killed in this War, but it very much reminds me of the Conflict between Pakistan and India, which was brought to a successful halt.

Then he spoke to the acting Prime Minister of Thailand:

I have just spoken to the Acting Prime Minister of Thailand, and it was a very good conversation. Thailand, like Cambodia, wants to have an immediate Ceasefire, and PEACE. I am now going to relay that message back to the Prime Minister of Cambodia. After speaking to both Parties, Ceasefire, Peace, and Prosperity seems to be a natural. We will soon see!

Notice in several of these posts that he stresses that one cannot happen without the other, with an end of the fighting a condition for trade with the United States, one of the most desirable markets in the world:

I just had a very good call with the Prime Minister of Cambodia, and informed him of my discussions with Thailand, and its Acting Prime Minister. Both Parties are looking for an immediate Ceasefire and Peace. They are also looking to get back to the “Trading Table” with the United States, which we think is inappropriate to do until such time as the fighting STOPS. They have agreed to immediately meet and quickly work out a Ceasefire and, ultimately, PEACE! It was an Honor to deal with both Countries. They have a long and storied History and Culture. They will hopefully get along for many years to come. When all is done, and Peace is at hand, I look forward to concluding our Trading Agreements with both!

There was no immediate response from Cambodia’s leader, Prime Minister Hun Manet, but Reuters quoted a Saturday statement from the country’s defense ministry on recent clashes:

…Cambodia’s defense ministry said Thailand had launched “a deliberate, unprovoked, and unlawful military attack” and was mobilizing troops and military equipment on the border.

“These deliberate military preparations reveal Thailand’s intent to expand its aggression and further violate Cambodia’s sovereignty,” it said.

Cambodia called for the international community to “condemn Thailand’s aggression in the strongest terms” and to prevent an expansion of its military activities, while Bangkok reiterated it wanted to resolve the dispute bilaterally.

Thailand’s acting PM reacted to Pres. Trump’s Truth Social posts in his own Facebook post, Reuters reported in the story linked above:

Thailand’s acting prime minister, Phumtham Wechayachai, thanked Trump and said Thailand “agrees in principle to have a ceasefire in place” but “would like to see sincere intention from the Cambodian side.”

Phumtham also said he had asked Trump “to convey to the Cambodian side that Thailand wants to convene a bilateral dialogue as soon as possible to bring forth measures and procedures for the ceasefire and the eventual peaceful resolution of the conflict.”

Here are some background details on the fighting in recent months between the nations:

More than 30 people have been killed and more than 130,000 people displaced in the worst fighting between the Southeast Asian neighbours in 13 years.

Before Trump spoke to the two leaders, clashes on the Thai-Cambodian border persisted into a third day and new flashpoints emerged as both sides said they had acted in self-defense in the border dispute and called on the other to cease fighting and start negotiations.

There were clashes early on Saturday, both sides said, in the neighbouring Thai coastal province of Trat and Cambodia’s Pursat Province, a new front more than 100 km (60 miles) from other conflict points along the long-contested border.

As we previously wrote in June, President Trump spoke about the numerous peace deals he has ushered in that he believes should lead to a Nobel Peace Prize, for which several countries have already nominated him. But Trump said at the time, “They won’t give me a Nobel Peace Prize,” since “[t]hey only give it to liberals.” We’ll see.
