Leftists have gone completely apoplectic over not being allowed to lead the “Resist Trump” movement from inside the house, so to speak, since President Trump was elected to a new term in November 2024. As RedState previously wrote in March, the president signed a new executive order aimed at restoring “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History” at the Smithsonian Institution.
Then in July, along the same lines in a story by my colleague Jim Thompson, we covered the Smithsonian managing to ruin even pop culture exhibits with progressive political interpretations. Thompson wrote:
…Apparently, the Smithsonian abounds with ideologues. Recently, the museum has, through one-sided display placards…and the elimination of important, impactful people and historical things, attempted to lecture visitors with ideology that is anathema to most Americans.
One of those display placards has found itself as the subject of the latest lefty nontroversy, with the legacy media showing it can’t bear the fact that their fellow resisters are losing their grip on rewriting history at American cultural mainstays like the Smithsonian, as USA Today does here:
The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C., has removed references to President Donald Trump in a display about impeachments, despite Trump being the first and only president in American history to be impeached twice. But the museum says the move is temporary.
The Washington Post first reported the change on Thursday, July 31. On Friday, Aug. 1, the Smithsonian clarified the museum’s removal. Here’s what we know.
The “impeachment” display is housed within the larger, permanent gallery called “The American Presidency,” which opened in 2000, according to an emailed statement from the Smithsonian. It features information and artifacts about Andrew Johnson, Bill Clinton and Richard Nixon, according to the display’s companion website. Nixon resigned before he could be formally impeached.
The institution patiently explains the common-sense reason for the change–the label was never meant to be permanant:
In September 2021, a “temporary label on content concerning the impeachments of Donald J. Trump” was added, according to the Smithsonian’s statement. “It was intended to be a short-term measure to address current events at the time, however, the label remained in place until July 2025.”
The display has since been returned to how it appeared nearly 20 years ago, according to the Smithsonian statement and the Washington Post’s report, which also noted that the exhibit now says, “only three presidents have seriously faced removal,” omitting Trump.
“In reviewing our legacy content recently, it became clear that the ‘Limits of Presidential Power’ section in ‘The American Presidency: A Glorious Burden’ exhibition needed to be addressed,” the museum’s statement said. “Because the other topics in this section had not been updated since 2008, the decision was made to restore the ‘Impeachment’ case back to its 2008 appearance.”
You can see the Left’s hatred practically oozing here, while in the same paragraph, they are forced to admit that Trump’s impeachments are noted: (emphasis added)
The companion website for the display does not include a dedicated section for the Trump impeachments but notes in an introductory sentence, “The House of Representatives impeached Andrew Johnson in 1868, William J. Clinton in 1998, and Donald Trump in 2019 and again in 2021. In all four cases the Senate voted to acquit.”
Guess what the dishonest leftist rag leaves out? A quick look at the companion website they mentioned shows that there are four other topics in that section (“Limits of Power”) besides Impeachment: Congress, The Supreme Court, Public Support, and The Press. Yet, they attempt to protray the entire exhibit as dedicated to impeachment in the headline, “Smithsonian explains why a Trump reference was removed from impeachment exhibit.” These people truly can’t quit their biased agenda against the 45th and 47th president.
The statement continues, closing with a timely reminder on federal monies for anyone on the Left who might be interested:
“A future and updated exhibit will include all impeachments,” the Smithsonian statement said, noting that updating and renewing permanent galleries”requires a significant amount of time and funding.”
The Smithsonian also tweeted out a similar statement Saturday, with more details on what they saw as the problems with the placard, while giving a timeline on when updates will be finished:
As the keeper of memory for the nation, it is our privilege and responsibility to tell accurate and complete histories. As has been recently reported, in July, a placard was removed from @amhistorymuseum’s exhibit “The American Presidency: A Glorious Burden.” The intent of the…

The placard, which was meant to be a temporary addition to a 25-year-old exhibition, did not meet the museum’s standards in appearance, location, timeline, and overall presentation. It was not consistent with other sections in the exhibit and moreover blocked the view of the objects inside its case. For these reasons, we removed the placard. We were not asked by any Administration or other government official to remove content from the exhibit.
The section in question, “Impeachment,” will be updated in the coming weeks to reflect all impeachment proceedings in our nation’s history.
The Left’s shedding tears on something like this is delicious. They truly have nothing better to do than cry over what’s likely nothing more than some long overdue housekeeping.
