Earlier today, President Trump went on Truth Social to denounce woke advertising and adopt Sydney Sweeney as one of his own:
A left-wing news source reported that Sydney Sweeney registered to vote as a Republican in Florida last year. I have no idea whether that is true or not. Neither does Trump; a reporter gave him that report. Ms. Sweeney herself has remained silent.
It remains to be seen whether the “Great Jeans” campaign will boost American Eagle sales, as Trump said, but investors certainly think it will. This is American Eagle’s share price for the last month:
Trump is also right about Jaguar, as I noted here. He is right, too, about Bud Light, sales of which have never recovered from the Dylan Mulvaney fiasco.
But why Trump continues his vendetta against Taylor Swift is beyond me. Swift is the world’s most popular entertainer, and has generally been apolitical. Yes, she indicated that she was voting for Kamala Harris. But for the most part she has stayed away from politics, and her shows, I believe, are completely untainted by leftism. Nor is there any truth to Trump’s claim that Swift is “NO LONGER HOT.” So, in short, it is typical Trump–two steps forward, one step back.
Meanwhile, one wonders: will Sweeney enter the political arena by commenting publicly on her ad campaign, the crazed response thereto, and perhaps her alleged Republican affiliation? Or will she (and perhaps we) be better served by staying out of the fray? I suspect the latter, but if Sweeney does come out as a Republican we will know that the world really has changed, and the tide truly is running our way.
