A walk in the woods

It’s come to this: from the Toronto Sun,

Veteran ignites debate by challenging Nova Scotia’s $25G fine for woods walk.

The retired warrant officer and combat veteran, Jeff Evely, is challenging a law in Nova Scotia prohibiting people from walking amidst trees. I’m not kidding. For his challenge, he faces a total fine approaching C$29,000.

The law purports to be a measure to prevent forest fires. But it comes across as something medieval, where commoners are prevented from entering the King’s forest.

Rather than prosecute arsonists, or practice anything resembling responsible forest management, the Crown (literally in the case of Canada) has decided to punish the common people, instead.

I wish MWO Evely all the luck in the world in his constitutional challenge.

It’s not just Nova Scotia. The National Post reports,

As of 12: 01 Sunday morning, New Brunswick wants everyone in the province to stay out of the woods. All Crown land will be closed.

To the east,

Three significant wildfires are raging in Newfoundland and Labrador where fines for violators of the province-wide fire ban were increased Friday afternoon up to $150,000, as well as up to a year in prison.

John wrote a week ago about how Canada ruined summer in Minnesota, again, with out-of-control wildfires out west. The smoke is back, again, this weekend.

I would have hoped that with Trudeau gone from office, the idiocy would have been dialed back. Apparently, not.
