From The Hill newspaper
Trump to seize control of DC police, activate National Guard; Dems rail against moves.
The “railing” was inevitable. If Trump is for something, all Democrats must be reflexively against it. The Washington Examiner‘s Byron York wrote this morning,
Trump is imagining a Washington DC with a far lower crime rate than its residents have become accustomed to. Many of those residents will oppose him for it. It’s like they are protective of their crime rate, now that Trump is threatening it.
York also notes,
According to [DC’s] MPD, it looks like the District is on track for about 170 murders this year. That’s less than 187 in 2024 and 274 in 2023. The decline is a key part of many criticisms of Trump over DC safety. But Trump says: 170 murders–that’s a lot of murders, no?
If Trump wants to reduce an already falling murder rate, that must be a bad thing. Democrats dutifully play along. The Hill reports,
Trump’s move drew swift backlash from local leaders and other Democratic elected officials, who said he was infringing on the district’s autonomy.
Adding this quote from Maryland Man’s favorite U.S. Senator,
Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) accused President Trump of a “raw authoritarian power grab” after the president moved to federalize Washington, D.C.’s police department and call the National Guard to the district’s streets.
The idea seems to be if something is an obvious good thing (such as reducing violent crime in the seat of the federal government) and Trump wants it, he must want it for the wrong reason.
Reductio ad absurdum, if you are drowning, and Trump wants to save your life, you are better off drowning, than letting Trump get his way. Just take one for the team, you will be thanked later.
