Tesla CEO and former DOGE chief Elon Musk is reportedly backpedaling on the idea of forming a third political party and instead seeking to use his vast wealth to support the leading contender for the presidency in 2028.
The pivot would be a wise and better use of his resources for the political fight in the coming midterms and the next presidential cycle.
Individuals close to Musk have noted that the billionaire philanthropist would prefer focusing on his successful companies rather than alienating customers through political advocacy, something he has repeatedly mentioned since his tenure at DOGE wrapped up.
But even beyond that, according to the Wall Street Journal, Musk is latching onto perhaps the second most notable face behind the MAGA movement – Vice President J.D. Vance.
“The billionaire Elon Musk is quietly pumping the brakes on his plans to start a political party, according to people with knowledge of his plans,” they write. “Musk and his associates have told people close to him that he is considering using some of his vast financial resources to back Vance if he decides to run for president in 2028, some of the people said.”

DIVE DEEPER: Why Can’t We Be Friends? Vance Hopes Musk Returns to Trump Orbit
CNN Is Having a Normal One – Panelist Suggests Trump Might Have Musk Killed or Imprisoned After Spat
Musk’s souring on the third-party gambit is a wise evolution back to sanity. Despite the many faults of the current two-party system and the sometimes blending of ideologies between the two, the Republican Party is the only one on the right capable of producing viable political candidates.
Musk’s money and resources would have gone to waste. And for what? To maybe capture a primary here or there? When in reality, the most significant impact would have been siphoning off votes to the benefit of the Democrats.
The SpaceX innovator is far too intelligent not to come around on that over a petty squabble with President Trump. That squabble – a disagreement between two strong-willed individuals regarding the “One Big Beautiful Bill” that simply spiraled out of control – should have been handled behind closed doors.
It didn’t, unfortunately, and resulted in some serious mud-slinging on Musk’s part. Since then, both parties involved have let tensions cool a bit.
“I think he’s a good person,” Trump said recently. “I think he had a bad moment, really bad moment. But he’s a good person. I believe that.”

The fact that the President did not cut him off immediately shows Musk’s value. Trump has launched people into orbit for far less than what Musk has said.
The WSJ report comes just days after RedState’s Bob Hoge revealed that Vance has been trying to urge Musk to come back to the MAGA team.
“My argument to Elon is … like … you’re not going to be on the left, right? Even if you wanted to be, and he doesn’t,” Vance told The Gateway Pundit. “They’re not going to have you back. That ship has sailed. And so, I really think it’s a mistake for him to break from the president.”
“My hope is that by the time of the midterms, he’s kind of come back into the fold.”
This latest report seems to indicate he’s doing just that. The prodigal son is returning to support MAGA once more.
