Yesterday Federal Housing Finance Agency director Bill Pulte appeared for an entertaining interview on CNBC. CNBC has posted the related story as “Trump housing regulator Pulte says Fed’s Cook should resign or be fired, alleging mortgage fraud.” I have posted CNBC’s video of the interview at the bottom.

Pulte has made a criminal referral of Fed Governor Lisa Cook for mortgage fraud based on loan applications for two primary residences. The interview was adversarial in nature. The CNBC hosts asked Pulte about his use of “this tool,” a/k/a criminal referral for violation of the criminal law. Shouldn’t it be routine? They follow up that question with one asking: “How does [this] wind up on your desk?” Isn’t that part of his job?

Pulte posted his referral of Cook on his X feed. Click on the image of the letter to pull up the whole thing.

When Pulte mentioned — complained? — that CNBC wouldn’t let viewers see the relevant material, they explained: “We just wanted to verify all the documents.” Trust, but verify, I guess. However, they could have attributed the documents to Pulte. The tone of the interview is weirdly off.

But here’s the beauty part. In his Axios PM newsletter yesterday, citing this Axios story, Axios honcho Mike Allen was put out by the criminal referral: “There’s no accusation Cook has defaulted on either loan.” Let’s just say that’s Axiotic.

Cook subsequently issued a statement late Wednesday: “I learned from the media that FHFA Director William Pulte posted on social media that he was making a criminal referral based on a mortgage application from four years ago, before I joined the Federal Reserve. “I have no intention of being bullied to step down from my position because of some questions raised in a tweet. I do intend to take any questions about my financial history seriously as a member of the Federal Reserve and so I am gathering the accurate information to answer any legitimate questions and provide the facts.”
