Keir Starmer is handling migration badly says seven in ten Britons

Seven out of ten Britons believe Sir Keir Starmer is handling migration badly according to recent polling.

A YouGov poll for The Times uncovered that 71 per cent of voters say the Prime Minister is handling the issue of asylum seeker hotels poorly, with a majority of 56 percent of Labour voters saying the same.

The bombshell new poll also found that almost four in ten voters believe that immigration and asylum is the most pressing issue facing Britain.

In contrast, a quarter said the most critical issue was the economy and just seven per cent of respondents chose health.

Only one per cent of participants said that Mr Starmer was handling the issue “very well”.

The revelation comes after a High Court granted an injunction forcing the Home Office to relocate up to 138 asylum seeking males staying at an Epping hotel in the coming days.

The Home Office has expressed concern that the ruling may undermine the Government’s entire asylum seeker policy after dozens of other local authorities have threatened similar legal action.

Over the weekend, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper announced plans to radically change the appeal system for asylum seekers amid growing public pressure.

Former Home Secretary, Lord Blunkett, called on the Government to take a more “radical” approach and suggested suspending the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and the UN Refugee Convention to tackle the crisis.

Lord Blunkett said: “I think that the individual measures the government has taken are extremely helpful in their own right but don’t add up either to a comprehensive answer or an understandable narrative.

“At the moment the issue is so toxic and beginning to get out of the government’s grip to the point it is very hard to bring it back.

“A further package of actions is absolutely vital to start controlling both the public narrative and the delivery.

“If this slips out of our hands, it’s incredibly difficult to pull it back. Once people have got it in their heads that the government haven’t a grip and that this is an intractable problem, they will turn on you.”

The YouGov poll also showed that voters believe Reform is the party best positioned to handle the issue of immigration and asylum.

Some 31 per cent answered Reform, 27 per cent picked the “don’t know” option, 18 per cent said “none” and just nine percent believe that Labour is the best party to handle the issue.

Earlier this year, Ms Cooper gave the green light for a review on Article 8 of the ECHR after fears emerged that it is being exploited by migrants to block deportations.

On Tuesday, Reform leader Nigel Farage announced plans for the mass deportation of hundreds of thousands of illegal migrants should they win the next election.

Mr Farage pledged to arrest small boat migrants upon their arrival on British shores, house them on disused military bases and deport within 30 days.

Reform also indicated it would seek return deals with countries such as Eritrea and Afghanistan, despite human rights record concerns.
