The UK’s smallest hotel has opened its doors, intriguingly located in a former Victorian lavatory beneath a bustling road. Nestled under St Giles in Oxford, The Netty has undergone an astonishing 17-year transformation.
This boutique hotel boasts just two suites, each spanning 30 square metres, accessible via their own individual street-level staircases. Hoping to offer guests ‘an immersive experience that reflects the unique location and storied history of the space.’ The Netty’s design is truly one-of-a-kind.
These gents’ loos were originally constructed in 1895, but they were shut down in 2008 due to safety concerns.
Oxford business owner Gwyn Harries-Jones purchased the site, but despite various development plans, it remained unused for 11 years before the hotel project commenced.
Named after an old Geordie term for an outhouse, the hotel incorporates local craftsmanship and cultural elements, even retaining some original features like the floor tiles.
Hotel manager Ana Pinheiro expressed her delight: “We are delighted to welcome guests to our boutique space where guests can experience the beauty of Oxford.”
