The war on noticing | Power Line

Regarding last week’s horrific Minneapolis Catholic church/school shooting, Congresswoman Ilhan Omar says that now is “not the moment to point fingers.” Unless she is the one pointing them.

From the New York Post,

Rep. Ilhan Omar slams Trump official for pointing out Minnesota church shooter’s trans identity: ‘Not the moment to point fingers.’

Apparently, she was on CNN this Sunday morning, following Seb Gorka. The Post reports

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) accused White House official Sebastian Gorka on Sunday of wanting “to deflect from the reality” of the Minneapolis Catholic school shooting by pointing out gunman Robin Westman’s transgender identity.

As inconvenient as it may be, Westman’s transgender identity does seem to be the distinguishing element of this specific horror. To its credit, the Post goes on to document seven (7) similar incidents involving transgendered persons dating back to 2018.

So what would Gorka be trying to deflect from? The Post quotes Omar,

“These people are all over the place because they want to deflect from the reality.” she continued, “which is that, there was, someone who came into that school, through the window, and assassinated two beautiful angels, as they prayed.”

“This is not the moment to point fingers,” Omar argued, as she called for banning assault weapons and more resources to address mental health issues in response to the shooting.

Except, as we’ve documented here on Power Line, Minnesota already has a “red flag” law in effect that wasn’t utilized in Westman’s case. And the specific type of mental health resource that Westman could have benefited from is outlawed under state law.

Omar wrote on Twitter (X) earlier today, in response to her CNN interview,

Tackling gun violence shouldn’t be a Democrat or Republican issue. We should work together as Americans to stop another act of terror from happening again.

That starts with a ban on assault weapons.

Omar herself points the finger in this tragedy at millions of law-abiding gun owners, as if they were responsible for these events.

Such a ban, by definition, will only impact otherwise law-abiding citizens and will do nothing to address the mental-health crisis resulting from Minnesota’s “sanctuary” laws.

As Gorka pointed out his morning,

The White House official argued that the massacre perpetrated by Westman, who confessed he was “‘tired of being trans,” is part of a disturbing trend of mass shootings committed by people struggling with their gender identity.

But, for Omar, it’s easier and more politically advantageous to blame the tools rather than the person.
