AfD gains in state election

As I frequently observe, the right wing is on the march everywhere on the planet except for the U.S.

From Politico,

Merz’s conservatives win key state vote despite far-right surge.

Politico reports,

The far-right Alternative for Germany [AfD] was the biggest winner of the night in terms of vote share gained, deepening its foothold in the west of the country.

The election occurred in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate, which includes the city of Mainz. In the state election, the leading party of the local legislature flipped from the left to the conservatives, with AfD taking third place. AfD gained the most from the previous election, at the apparent expense of the socialists and two more centrist parties.

If the conservatives would work with the “far-right” AfD, the two could form a majority in the legislature. But that may not be in the cards,

To do so, the party would need to tear down Germany’s so-called firewall, which has been in place since the end of World War II and has prevented the far right from governing in a coalition with mainstream parties at both the state and national level.

I’m not sure what the point would be of “winning” an election, defeating your strongest rival, and then refusing to govern.
