Travel chaos has swept across much of the nation since Storm Goretti struck on Thursday evening, bringing fierce winds with gusts reaching 98mph at St Mary’s Airport on the Isles of Scilly.
The Met Office escalated its wind warning for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly from amber to red, cautioning that conditions pose a “danger to life”.
The East Midlands received an amber snow warning for Friday, covering Derby, Derbyshire, Leicester, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire and Rutland.
National Highways also issued an amber severe weather alert for snowfall across the East Midlands, effective from 6pm on Thursday, 8 January, through to 9am on Friday, 9 January.
