The Trump administration and the State of Florida have announced that they are planning a new detention center to house criminal illegal aliens, somewhere in the Everglades. The new center is being referred to as “Alligator Alcatraz.” That is what the Attorney General of Florida calls it:
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier said a largely abandoned airfield in the Everglades would be repurposed as a detention facility to house immigrants living in the U.S. illegally with criminal records. He dubbed it “Alligator Alcatraz,” saying any detainees seeking to escape would face alligators and pythons in the treacherous wetlands surrounding the site.

“There’s really nowhere to go. If you’re housed there, if you’re detained there, there’s no way in, no way out,” Uthmeier said in an interview with conservative commentator Benny Johnson, describing the “Alligator Alcatraz” facility.
Alligators, yes, but let’s not forget the pythons. Another horrible way to go.
What is it all about? Self-deportation. Joe Biden invited somewhere between 10 million and 15 million illegal aliens into the U.S., many of whom are criminals. Logistically, there is no way to deport them all. We need to deport some, obviously, but most, seeing the writing on the wall, will decide to go home the same way they got here.
That self-deportation strategy explains why the administration sent a planeload of illegals to Guantanamo Bay, and publicized the move with press photos and videos. The same thing here: illegal criminals will read about “Alligator Alcatraz” and decide that, rather than facing alligators and pythons, the time has come to return home.
This strategy is working. As Bill Glahn noted here, the number of foreign-born residents living in the U.S. declined by almost exactly a million between January and May. A few were deported, but the vast majority just left.
So, kudos to Alligator Alcatraz. It occurs to me that the administration might open another detention center in Alaska. Northern Alaska. Above the Arctic Circle. Most illegal aliens come from warm climates, and that could be another good way to encourage self-deportation.
