The flooding on the Guadalupe River in Texas has been a devastating tragedy, and there are sadly at least 59 confirmed deaths and numerous people still missing, including girls from a Christian camp that were swept away by the surge. As we’ve reported, that hasn’t stopped ghoulish Democrats from trying to politicize the disaster, and of course many leftists quickly decided who was to blame for nature’s wrath: President Trump.

Although there are ghouls in this story, there is also a true hero. Details are thin, but Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said Sunday that one man is responsible for saving an incredible number of lives—on his first mission.
United States Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer and Petty Officer Scott Ruskin, directly saved an astonishing 165 victims in the devastating flooding in central Texas.
This was the first rescue mission of his career and he was the only triage coordinator at the scene.

Scott Ruskin is an American hero.
His selfless courage embodies the spirit and mission of the @USCG.
To become a USCG rescue swimmer, you’ve got to prove your mettle:
Coast Guard rescue swimmers, formally known as Aviation Survival Technicians, are trained and must earn National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) certification in addition to intense physical training and water rescue techniques in a number of different scenarios. The grueling training lasts approximately one year and has one of the highest attrition rates in the United States military — nearly an 80% fail rate.
Although we don’t know the exact nature of the rescues, it’s still an incredible feat and stands in stark contrast to those who are trying to make this into some sort of discussion on climate change and budgets.
Thank God for American heroes. ❤️

As our sister site Twitchy reports, an internet user named Intelschizo claims that the achievement set a new record, although they were not able to confirm it:

This achievement sets a new record for the most lives saved by a Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer in a single mission, surpassing the previous record of 153 saves during Hurricane Katrina.
Bravo Zulu to AST Ruskin and U.S. Coast Guard Heartland District personnel currently operating around Kerrville.
This brave officer can’t bring back the lost or stem the heartbreak from this tragedy, but by being a hero when it counted, he did his part to make sure it wasn’t that much worse.
