Republicans have been engaged in an abundance of schadenfreude since the November presidential election, watching the Democrat party in freefall. They have steadfastly refused to do any sort of reflection or looking within to figure out why they lost so badly, beyond the fact that they had a terrible candidate. There have been a few in the party who have tried to tried to broach the subject, only to get slapped back by the party elite. But a new survey just might be something they want to pay attention to, even if we hope they don’t.

A new Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Thursday polled 4,258 people nationwide between June 11 through 16. Of that group, 1,293 said they were Democrats. The results are not good for those who are hanging on to power for dear life in the party. Of the Democrats polled, 62 percent said “the leadership of the Democratic Party should be replaced with new people.” Just 24 percent disagreed or were unsure or did not respond.

It gets worse for Democrat leadership. Several of the respondents said that the party could “sometimes prioritize issues that they view as less essential, including transgenderism.” Sometimes? A mere 17 percent of the Democrats surveyed said issues like allowing biological males to compete in women’s sports should be a priority, and 28 percent said they believe that the party leaders view it as a priority.
Mark Riddle is the president of the Democratic research firm Future Majority. He confirms what many Democrats already know. There is a serious disconnect in the Democrat party between voters and leadership. He said of Democrat voters, “Voters are very impatient right now. They want elected officials at all levels to address the cost of living, kitchen-table issues and affordability.”
The Democrat party has long been made up of various coalitions. But many times, the people who make up those groups don’t always think that their particular issue should be front and center at all times. A prime example of that, one trans individual stated, “there are more pressing issues.” He added, “There are more important things to be moving the needle on … things that actually matter to people’s livelihoods.”

Unfortunately for respondents of the poll, their party leadership has already demonstrated that they refuse to step aside for fresh blood and ideas that might actually work. Former Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) David Hogg tried to initiate a move to bring new young candidates into the party, but those beholden to older incumbents would have no part of it, and it led to Hogg’s ouster from his position.
Democrats’ refusal to court younger candidates is just one of many woes they face. My colleague Nick Arama recently reported on Democrats’ cash flow issues as well. Big money donors are reluctant to step up, and there is talk as to whether they might have to borrow money. Add to that the fact that DNC Chair Ken Martin is being seen as ineffective. One party member called him “weak and whiny,” and another said he was “invisible.” Former Obama Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, who is rumored to be a potential 2028 Democrat presidential candidate, also called the party “weak and woke.”

Are Democrats going to wish they had listened to David Hogg instead of promptly showing him the door? Will they draft some younger candidates in 2026 who have talked to real people more recently than the entrenched incumbent swamp creatures? Democrat strategist James Carville called Hogg a “contemptible little twerp,” but that twerp may just get the last laugh. Until that happens, Republicans will just be enjoying more schadenfreude.
