I’m not much into predictions, but I guessed this morning that the Star Tribune might get around to taking note of University of Minnesota Professor Melanie Yazzie — not with respect to her extremist rant following the massacre of 10/7 about dismantling Israel and the United States or the Title VI complaint against her submitted to the university this week, but rather by reference to Ann Coulter’s deleted tweet that “We didn’t kill enough Indians.”
And this afternoon here we have it: “A response to Ann Coulter and her pro-genocide social media post,” by one Anton Treuer. At the moment the column has made it onto the paper’s home page.
As also predicted, the column omits any mention of the remarks that provoked Coulter. We are only informed that she made her offending comment “in response to a speech by Melanie Yazzie, a Native artist and professor, about decolonization.”
The paper identifies Treuer as “a contributing columnist for the Minnesota Star Tribune focusing on Native American histories, cultures, and issues. He is a professor of Ojibwe at Bemidji State University and the author of many books.” As for the Star Tribune, I would add this. I wish it could be deleted, but it persists. The Twin Cities and the state of Minnesota would be better off without it.
