James Comey’s tenure as FBI Director was a disaster, and Comey will go down in history as one of the worst “public servants” of the modern era. But did he really issue a death threat against President Trump?
Comey posted this on Instagram:
I am totally out of the loop on urban slang, but even I know what “86” means. And “47” can only be a reference to Donald Trump. The reaction to Comey’s post was immediate:
“While President Trump is currently on an international trip to the Middle East, the former FBI Director puts out what can clearly be interpreted as ‘a hit’ on the sitting President of the United States — a message etched in the sand,” White House deputy chief of staff Taylor Budowich wrote on X. “This is deeply concerning to all of us and is being taken seriously.”

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem indicated that the Secret Service is now involved in the matter.“Disgraced former FBI Director James Comey just called for the assassination of @POTUS Trump,” Noem wrote on X. “DHS and Secret Service is investigating this threat and will respond appropriately.”
Comey deleted the Instagram post, and tried to explain:
“I posted earlier a picture of some shells I saw today on a beach walk, which I assumed were a political message,” Comey said in a statement, posted on Instagram. “I didn’t realize some folks associate those numbers with violence.”
This seems to me to dig the hole deeper. I think there is almost no chance that Comey happened upon these shells, arranged by someone else. I think he did it himself. And he admits that he “assumed [it was] a political message.” Why? Because “47” obviously referred to Trump. So that leaves “86.” Comey says he “didn’t realize some folks associate those numbers with violence.” I don’t believe it. If it is a political message, and it refers to Trump, what did he think the “86” signified? Just two random numbers? So that, without understanding the message, he somehow thought the arrangement was “cool” enough to post on Instagram.
Murder the President! How cool can you get? Comey is a rabid and thoroughly dishonest Democrat, as he proved during his tenure as FBI Director, and subsequently. Fantasies about assassinating Trump are widespread among Democrats, and it seems plain that Comey indulged such a fantasy here, in a message to his fellow Democrats who follow him on Instagram.
This would be contemptible if done by anyone, but by a former FBI Director? Appalling.
