BBC apologizes, but not to Trump

The Sunday Times reports,

BBC to apologise for doctoring Trump speech.

I mentioned this controversy last week, which involves a BBC-aired documentary on the events of January 6, 2021. The odd thing to me is that BBC isn’t apologizing directly to Trump, the aggrieved party.

From The Times,

[Samir] Shah, who became chair of the BBC 18 months ago, will make his statement in response to a request from parliament’s cross-party culture, media and sport committee, which last week said the corporation had “serious questions to answer” over the Trump edit. The statement will also be shared with staff.

The taxpayer-funded bureacracy will issus an apology to Parliament. Will the response be published? Or will the public have to wait for the leaks to see it?

For its part, the BBC itself is claiming victimhood status in the whole affair. From the U.K. Daily Mail,

On Radio 4’s flagship Today programme, Mr [Nick] Robinson acknowledged that there was ‘a genuine concern about editorial standards and mistakes’ at the national broadcaster, but went on to say: ‘There is also a political campaign by people who want to destroy the organisation that you are currently listening to. Both things are happening at the same time.’

That doesn’t sound like much of an apology. The Daily Mail notes,

Mr Robinson, the Corporation’s fourth-best-paid presenter on £410,000 a year, also raised the prospect that Right-wing politicians could ‘actually bring this organisation down’ as he spoke to political commentator Tim Montgomerie.

That would be a shame.
