Bessent’s beatdown

Hypocrisy must be the mother’s milk of democratic politics. George Stephanopoulos is the highest paid anchor at ABC News. He used to shill for Bill Clinton as his senior advisor for policy and strategy and White House Communicatons Director. Now he shills for the Democratic Party as a “newsman” at ABC News. Despite his purported newsman’s role, it’s all politics. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent showed up George Stephanopoulos to be a world-class hypocrite this past Sunday on the ABC News This Week gabfest.

Lindsay Kornick reports the story for Fox News with relevant background. As one of the photo captions in the story puts it: “U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent repeatedly pressed George Stephanopoulos about his smearing of Republicans for government shutdowns.” Woo hoo!

You might observe that Bessent appeared to make Stephanopolous a little uncomfortable. The little man sought to shut Bessent down: “I can disagree with you about the history there, but we don’t have [time for] a history lesson right now.” It’s the war of memory against forgetting.

In the post below, Bessent writes:

In 2001, George Stephanopoulos admitted to PBS Frontline that the Clinton Administration worked to paint Congress as “blackmailing the country to get their way” via government shutdown and characterized them as “basically terrorists.”

In 2025, he calls these quotes “a mischaracterization of history” – what changed, George?

Kornick concludes her story: “Fox News Digital reached out to ABC News for comment.” We’re not holding our breath on that one.
