Boy, 8, stabbed in primary school as police quiz 11-year-old

An eight-year-old boy has been stabbed in a primary school, with police questioning an 11-year-old in connection with the incident.

The alleged incident took place at Brentwood Park Primary School in Berwick, Australia, on Thursday morning.

The victim was said to have been stabbed just as the school bell rang. A female member of staff also sustained minor injuries.

Both were treated by paramedics for non-life-threatening injuries on school grounds and did not require hospital treatment, police confirmed.

Brentwood and Kambrya College, both located on Bemersyde Drive, were placed into lockdown at 9am, the MailOnline reports.

A search of the alleged attacker’s bag uncovered two kitchen knives.

The Herald Sun are also reporting that the child was armed with the knives and a toy gun, as he allegedly stormed a grade 1 classroom.

The 11-year-old boy was spoken to by police at the scene and later taken to hospital for assessment.

An education department spokesman said it was working with the school regarding an incident that involved a young student behaving in a “dangerous manner”.

“The school enacted its safety procedures, and police and paramedics attended the school,” the spokesman added.

“We are supporting both the staff member and the student and are providing additional wellbeing supports to those who need it.”

After the lockdown had been lifted, worried parents frantically rushed to the scene, according to the Herald Sun.

“[My wife] is American, so it hits a bit differently, so we thought it was best we come pick them up,” one parent said.

It follows a recent string of schools being forced into lockdowns due to apparent danger to their students.

Merely days ago, several schools in Sydney’s north west were forced to close their doors for a brief while, as residents spotted a man in the local area carrying what appeared to be firearms – they turned out to be toys.

On November 19, police were called to reports of two males possibly armed with machetes in the upmarket Bayside suburb of Brighton.

A local school, Elsternwick Primary, was reportedly put into lockdown over safety concerns, along with the nearby North Brighton Children’s Centre.

Police attended and found two youths just down the road from the school on the corner of Martin and Cochrane Streets.

Police confirmed that one of the boys was arrested for possessing a baton and a drug of dependence, but no machetes were found.
