Britons divided over Costa Coffee cup as some complain ‘it’s only August’ – while others think it’s ‘great’

Shoppers visiting Tesco stores have encountered an unexpected seasonal surprise at Costa Coffee machines: Christmas-themed cups appearing in early August.

A food blog’s social media post revealed the discovery, showing a cup decorated with ice-skating figures in winter clothing from what seems to be Costa’s 2024 festive collection.

The early appearance of holiday packaging has sparked debate across social media platforms.

Taking to Facebook, some customers praised the move as “great sustainability common sense”.

Meanwhile, others expressed dismay at premature festive reminders, with one commenter lamenting: “No! I can hear the Christmas songs already.”

The timing prompted playful observations, with one person noting: “Looks like Mariah [Carey] has been beaten to being first out this year.”

Others adopted a pragmatic stance, stating simply: “It’s a cup, so use it.”

Some holiday enthusiasts embraced the early festive spirit. “As soon as it turns August 1, it’s Christmas,” one gleeful shopper rejoiced.

Costa Coffee’s dedicated focus on sustainability might explain the cup’s appearance.

Promises include making “all our primary packaging reusable or recyclable” and ensuring “single-use product packaging for Costa items will contain an average of at least 50 per cent recycled content.”

However, online discussions have largely centred on timing rather than environmental considerations.

Responses varied from an enthusiastic “Oh yes” to firm objections like “Stop it” and “No”, with several noting that “[it’s] only August”.

The ongoing debate highlights differing views on when seasonal preparations become socially acceptable.

With Halloween creeping towards us, Newfoodsuk noted that new Kenco Pumpkin Spice Latte sachets have also been spotted at Tesco.

The food blog announced the news on social media, throwing in two seasonal emojis – a pumpkin and an autumn leaf – for good measure.

Shoppers expressed excitement to try the festive find, sharing comments such as, “It’s starting”, “We need these”, and “Buzzing”.

“Why did I not know this earlier?” one Facebook user asked. “Wish I’d known yesterday,” lamented another.

In other Tesco news, the supermarket recently announced the relaunch of its popular “eat for free” scheme over the summer.

GB News has contacted Costa Coffee and Tesco for comment regarding the Christmas-themed cups.
