Canada’s Mark Carney speaks on Charlie Kirk’s murder after long delay, says he is ‘appalled’

(LifeSiteNews) — After a long delay, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney finally broke his silence on the assassination of American conservative political commentator Charlie Kirk, saying he was “appalled” by his murder while calling for “prayers” for his family.

“I am appalled by the murder of Charlie Kirk. There is no justification for political violence and every act of it threatens democracy,” wrote Carney in a statement on X Thursday morning.

“My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and loved ones.”

Some Liberal MPs blasted Kirk’s death almost immediately yesterday, well ahead of their leader, Carney.

“The murder of Charlie Kirk is a tragedy & I pray for his family. I hope that those on this & other platforms that repeatedly personally attack people & incite hate against them look at this and see the potential real life consequences of targeted hateful rhetoric,” wrote Liberal MP Anthony Housefather on X Wednesday.

Poilievre says Kirk was ‘mercilessly assassinated’ for simply expressing his views

Canada’s Conservative Party leader, Pierre Poilievre, on the other hand, on Thursday gave a touching tribute to Charlie Kirk, saying he was “mercilessly assassinated” for simply expressing his “contrary views.”

“Before I begin, please allow me to offer my condolences to the families, the family and loved ones of Charlie Kirk, the 31-year-old father of two who was mercilessly assassinated yesterday at a university campus for having expressed contrary views,” said Poilievre at a press conference today.

Poilievre said that universities are “supposed to be places of debate where differing opinions can be offered and exchanged in peace and security,” rather than places of “violence.”

“We must all unite, regardless of our political views, around a simple principle. Political violence is never acceptable. Every person should be free to express their opinion without fear of violence,” he said.

Poilievre, along with many of his MPs, were among the first major political figures in Canada to blast Wednesday’s shooting death of Kirk.

As reported by LifeSiteNews, Kirk, who was the CEO of Turning Point USA (TPUSA), was shot in the neck during an event on the campus of Utah Valley University and later died.

LifeSiteNews also reported Thursday that while the suspect/s involved in Kirk’s death are or are still at large, law enforcement found a rifle near the campus where Kirk was shot, with cartridges all “engraved” with expressions of “transgender and anti-fascist ideology.”
