Ilhan Omar married Ahmed Hirsi in 2002 “in their faith tradition.” Their marriage represented a merger of Somalia’s two largest clans: the Darood (Omar) and Hawiye (Hirsi). The clans are rivals. They don’t get along. The merger was therefore one source of Omar’s political appeal to Somalis in 2016. Moreover, according to my Somali friends, Hirsi was the brains of the operation before Omar blew him off for her third husband, Tim Mynett.
Minneapolis mayoral candidate Omar Fateh derives from the Darood clan. In Minneapolis’s mayoral election last week, Omar suported the ideologically fetid Omar Fateh. Hirsi reportedly supported victorious incumbent Jacob Frey. I have Bill Murray’s rendition of “Star Wars” playing in my head: “Clan wars! Nothing but clan wars!”
In the undated video below Omar lectures an audience Somali elders with Fateh by her side. Omar instructs them to get with the program: Somalis must stick together against the rest of us. This is a culturally conservative crowd. I’m not entirely sure Omar’s lecture went down smoothly. I don’t think they enjoyed being hectored by her. Contrary to the gist of Andy Ngo’s comment, the video below appears to derive from a pre-election campaign rally for Fateh. In any event, this is worth a look.
Congresswoman Ilhan Omar lectured and lashed out at Somali American voters who didn’t support Omar Fateh in the Minneapolis mayoral election. Some analysts believe inter-tribal disputes among Somalis divided the vote. pic.twitter.com/YkNFUz1VdG
