Clueless In Seattle | Power Line

Lost in the shuffle of this month’s elections was the one for Mayor of Seattle. It was won narrowly by Katie Wilson, a proud socialist who, according to the New York Post, is “still financially supported by her New York parents at 43 years old.” Now Wilson has outlined her program for the economic revitalization of Seattle:

I have no idea how Seattle would “not allow” a grocery chain to close a money-losing store. Attempting to do so, without compensation, would be unconstitutional. But more fundamentally, Wilson in her socialist ignorance seems not to understand that threatening to prevent a company from closing a money-losing grocery store in Seattle is the surest way to guarantee that no grocery store company will ever build a new store in Seattle.

Wilson’s solution, like Zohran Mamdani’s, is city-owned grocery stores. If Seattle actually builds some, it will be fun to watch them fail.

Finally, Wilson refers to “food deserts” and ascribes them to some kind of irrational corporate ill-will. Actually, a dearth of grocery stores is caused by an epidemic of shoplifting and other crime that causes such stores to lose money. But improving law enforcement to prevent such losses due to crime is no doubt the last thing on Mayor Wilson’s agenda.
