From a column in the U.K. Guardian,
Blue states should come together to declare an emergency. Here’s how.
Ok. I’m all ears,
States opposed to Trump can create a compact – a new prototype for American government – even if it’s perceived as political theater.
I’m no student of history, but I’m pretty certain that was tried right after the Ft. Sumter incident. The author refers to 1776, but his idea is straight out of 1861.
What kind of “compact”?
Like the founders, we should create a limited, invitation-only body – an embryonic constitutional convention – that the anti-Trump blue states exclusively set up for themselves, limit to themselves, and control.
Limited? Invitation only? Exclusively? May I remind readers that all of the Confederate states were blue states at the. time of their confederation.
Readers wonder why I quote from organs like the Guardian. It’s what Democrats are saying to each other when they think no one is listening. The pitch,
But the point is to put forward a prototype for a new type of American government, for a post-Trump country, that carries forward part of the existing institutional framework that is worth preserving, alongside radical change in response to Trump.
It will all end up in tears, but that’s the goal. We’ve watched for years now as blue states refuse to assist the feds with enforcement of our national immigration laws. Under Trump 2.0, we see blue states actively preventing the feds with enforcing federal laws within their state/county/city boundaries.
The author makes the common mistake that the “problem” is Trump. I’ve argued for more than a decade that Trump is a sign, not source.
In regards to the deployment of national guard soldiers, I hear people on the left say that they are anticipating a “Kent State” moment.
Personally, I expect to see a “Ft. Sumter” moment even sooner. As a prelude, I would expect to see a Harpers Ferry type incident occur within a deep blue state. And by Harpers Ferry, I refer to a prelude incident where a Federal facility is attacked inside of a blue state by a local zealot.
