In blue cities across America—Portland, Oregon, especially—often violent protesters now seek to surround ICE facilities to stop federal officers from fulfilling their assigned and legal duties of arresting illegal aliens.
Some 10 million or more illegal aliens were allowed to enter the U.S. during the Biden years—illegally and thus without criminal or health checks.

So what we are witnessing in Portland—and elsewhere—is a neo-Confederate attempt to supersede federal law and, in reactionary fashion, invoke states’ and cities’ rights.

JOHN adds: In Mayor Johnson’s press conference, he bizarrely claimed that “The right wing in this country wants a rematch of the Civil War.” I have no idea what he meant by that, but by declaring “ICE-free zones” where federal law does not apply, Johnson is in fact replicating the rebellion that led to the Civil War. Only days ago, it seemed hyperbolic to describe the resistance to lawful federal authority in states like California, Oregon and Illinois as “Confederate.” Today, that characterization looks frighteningly on target.
The Trump administration has no intention of taking over law enforcement responsibilities in cities like Portland and Chicago. But under the Insurrection Act, it has the clear right to intervene with National Guardsmen or any other federal troops if disorder is preventing the execution of federal laws, which it indisputably is. So I think it is increasingly clear that, someday soon, the Supreme Court will uphold the administration’s deployment of Guardsmen, and if necessary other forces, to those cities.
