From the New Y0rk Post,
Migrant crossings in once-overrun Darien Gap drop to almost zero with Trump immigration crackdown in full swing.
During the height of the southern border crisis under former Pres. Joe Biden, the Darien Gap was a key part of the pipeline of illegal immigrants (from all continents) coming up from South America.
The gap measures some 66 miles of roadless terrain on the Panamanian Isthmus connecting North and South America through Panama and Colombia. The jungle there can only be traversed by foot or by boat and represents an interruption the Pan American Highway that otherwise is said to run from the Arctic Ocean in northern Alaska to the southern tip of Argentina and Chile.
With the existence of the 66-mile Darien Gap, the Highway, obviously, does no such thing.
The Post reports,
Only 10 migrants traversed the Darien Gap in June, according to the data. Under President Joe Biden, crossings peaked [for 2024] at 37,166 in February 2024, according to data provided by the Department of Homeland Security.
The point being, with the U.S.-Mexican border closed to nonauthorized persons, the pipeline of immigrants, 1,300-per–day-strong as recently as last year, has completely dried up. Back in 2022, Panamanian authorities were seeing move than 2,300 cross per day, according to the Post.
One factor that helped the situation was the 2024 election of a new right-wing President for Panama, Jose Molino. He took office in July 2024 and vowed to close the Gap.
Mission accomplished!
