WASHINGTON, D.C. (LifeSiteNews) — Washington, D.C., will cut $600,000 from its “Office of LGBTQ Affairs” due to congressional cuts to its budget, according to the office of Mayor Muriel Bowser.
Still, the city will provide the office $1.7 million in the coming fiscal year, according to the Washington Blade, an LGBT outlet.
The Blade says that cuts are part of a drop in two revenue streams brought about by the Trump administration’s fiscal measures. One, the Trump administration has cut the federal workforce, which has led to a drop in tax revenue for the city. Second, the recent budget bill passed by Congress cut $1.1 billion from the city’s budget.
Some “special projects” will face cuts, including the “Black LGBTQ History Preservation Commission,” established in 2024.
Landlords and first responders can still access “LGBTQIA+ Cultural Humility Trainings,” and the office will keep managing “housing vouchers” for residents, a spokesperson told the Blade.
The office is currently run by Japer Bowles and works to “provide grants to community-based organizations who serve the (so-called) LGBTQ+ community and LGBTQ+ youth (i.e., young people with sexual and gender confusion) experiencing homelessness” and conduct other activities.
Other events organized by the office include an annual “drag queen” “race.”
The office, according to Bowles’ bio, caters to “the nation’s largest (so-called) LGBTQIA+ community, per capita and over 300 LGBTQIA+ programs and organizations.”
It falls under the mayor’s Community Affairs department, which includes other identity-based offices such as the “Mayor’s Office on African-American Affairs,” a separate “Mayor’s Office on African Affairs,” and a “Mayor’s Office on Latino Affairs.”
In June, the city hosted “World Pride 2025” that included multiple “drag queen story hours,” according to the Daily Wire.
