Connecticut Democrat Rep. Jim Himes made some startling comments on MSNBC earlier this week, arguing that because of President Trump’s strikes on suspected narco-terrorist boats, MAGA supporters should be worried about “who gets killed” when the next Democratic president gets into office.
“There will be a Democratic president someday. And all my MAGA friends who are cheering on these illegal killings need to imagine who gets killed when President Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says that it doesn’t matter what the law says, she’s going to do what she’s going to do,” Himes said.
Himes made his comments in response to Sen. Lindsey Graham, (R-SC), who ripped into Sen. Ruben Gallego, (D-AZ) earlier this week after Gallego said U.S. military strikes on alleged drug boats in the Caribbean “sanctioned murder.”
“To say that we’re engaging in murder is just such an outrage,” Graham stated. “The president of the United States as commander in chief has the authority to do these strikes. Nobody accused Bush of committing murder when he invaded Panama to take down Noriega. Nobody accused Reagan of murder when he went into Grenada to stop Cuban influence growing in Grenada, threatening our backyard, so the president has history on his side, he has the Constitution on his side. Congress has declared war five times in 250 years, so when I hear that the military can’t be used by the commander in chief, unless Congress declares war, it just shows me how ignorant these people are.”
“The president has all the authority in the world and if you want to fight over this, let’s fight over this. I think most Americans are going to be with Trump,” Graham added later.
During his MSNBC interview, Himes hypothesized, “There is a purported memo inside the White House articulating the legal basis for these strikes which has not been shared with the Congress. Now, I wonder why it hasn’t been shared with the Congress because I bet if it exists, that it’s nonsense. And look, if Lindsey Graham and other Republicans want to go the route of saying, ‘It’s OK to kill people illegally, just so long as the American public supports it,’ the American public needs to really think that through.”

Himes conveniently ignored that President Barack Obama oversaw a 2011 drone attack killing Anwar al-Awlaki, a leader of Al Qaeda but also an American citizen, as well as his 16-year-old son.

In early October, Himes joined other Democrats to send a letter to President Trump “demanding he provide the list of designated terrorist organizations (DTOs) he has unilaterally declared as such and provide evidence for his justifications used in several recent lethal U.S. military strikes in the Caribbean Sea,” the Democrats on the House Foreign Affairs Committee reported.
Himes’ office did not respond to a request to comment.
