Desperately Defending Timmy | Power Line

Minnesota’s welfare fraud scandals dominate the national news, and calls are rising for Governor Tim Walz to resign. The Minnesota Star Tribune, a longtime DFL mouthpiece that is now run by a former Walz cabinet member, is doing its best to fend off criticism of the Walz regime. Toward that end, its “reporters” are desperately looking for a way to discredit the Nick Shirley video of Somali day care centers that has been seen by more than 100 million people.

Deena Winter, a Star Tribune reporter, evidently was assigned that task. In the Shirley video, he has a colleague who is identified only as “David.” Winter apparently thought this could be the weak link. So she set out to dox David:

Winter thought she had a good idea who David is, but she was wrong. She thought that he might be David Zimmer, American Experiment’s policy fellow specializing in public safety. I have no idea why, since David Zimmer bears zero resemblance to the guy in the video. Still, Winter DMed American Experiment policy fellow Bill Glahn on Twitter and texted American Experiment’s Communications Director Bill Walsh to try to confirm her theory that “David” on the video is David Zimmer. They both told her that her identification was wrong, and Zimmer had nothing to do with it, as you can plainly see if you look at his picture on our web site. But looking up a photo on a web site is too much to expect from a liberal “reporter.”

This reveals the desperation of the Democratic Party as it tries to shore up its defenses against the Somali fraud scandal. In fact, the Walz administration has no defense: it was a willing partner in the multi-billion dollar Somali welfare fraud. So it is trying to change the subject by attacking the messenger. Deena Winter tried to help by identifying the Shirley video with Minnesota’s most prominent conservative (actually, common sense) organization, American Experiment.

Winter’s effort appears to have been a complete failure. She has now deleted her social media accounts.

Winter’s article appeared in the Star Tribune a little while ago. It quotes Walz administration officials uncritically, and takes an irrelevant swipe at Nick Shirley. But it says nothing about “David.”

The Democrats are reeling, as their desperate attempts to somehow discredit the Shirley video show. But in reality, the Shirley video is just a belated tip of the iceberg. For four years now, the solid evidence of fraud in Minnesota’s welfare programs has come from the FBI and the United States Attorney’s Office. We are talking about, I believe, more than $10 billion in criminal fraud.

The Democratic Party and its press minions can’t hide from the facts for long.
