I am sad to note the death of former Vice President Dick Cheney yesterday at the age of 84. The statement released by his family is posted below.

Steve Hayes wrote the biography Cheney (2007). It’s interesting from the first page. I recommend it to those who seek to get a handle on his career in public service. He also told his own story in In My Time (2011).
The controversies of the Bush administration included the Iraq war, the intelligence flaps, and the financial meltdown, all of which resulted in the election of Barack Obama. The damage continues. Someone smarter and more knowledgeable than I will have to assess his career. I can only say he was a patriot who sought the best interest of the United States.
John Hinderaker, Paul Mirengoff, and I spent a happy evening with Mr. and Mrs. Cheney in early 2005. Mrs. Cheney invited us and our wives along with a few of her other favorites — I remember Glenn Reynolds and Hugh Hewitt — to join them for dinner at their official residence on the grounds of the Naval Observatory. At the end of a long day, Mr. Cheney gave us an overview of the state of the world as he understood it. I think we were all impressed. Our condolences to the Cheney family. RIP.
