Emergency crews rush to huge blaze engulfing upper floors of high-rise

A major fire has ripped through a high-rise building in the Bronx area of New York after a reported gas leak.

More than 200 fire and emergency crews rushed to the scene shortly after midnight local time (5.00am GMT), as thick black smoke engulfed the upper floors and skies.


The blaze is said to have spread to multiple apartments in the 17-story building, according to a statement from the New York City Fire Department.

Multiple injuries have been reported online, though it is not immediately clear if this is the case.

Unconfirmed social media posts also suggests fatalities, though authorities have not verified these claims.

The New York City Fire Department confirmed on their social media: “FDNY members are operating at a 4-alarm fire at 3485 Bivonia Street in the Bronx.”

One video circulating online includes a woman claiming there was a “loud explosion” before the blaze.
