Better late than never. The Associated Press (AP) was the first to report,
Trump administration is reviewing all 55 million foreigners with US visas for any violations.
55 million is an extraordinarily large number. I frequently mention how America is home to more than 50 million foreign-born residents. That 50 million represents the largest number (and share of the overall population) at any time in America’s 250-year history.
But almost half of the foreign born residents group (~24 million) are now U.S. citizens, and wouldn’t need/have visas. So the 55 million would have to represent roughly 27 million foreign-born non-citizen residents (including illegal immigrants), and another 30 million people temporarily in America with actual documentation.
The AP reports,
The Trump administration said Thursday it is reviewing more than 55 million people who have valid U.S. visas for any violations that could lead to deportation, part of a growing crackdown on foreigners who are permitted to be in the United States.
In addition, it was announced,
The U.S. also will stop issuing worker visas for commercial truck drivers, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Thursday on X. He said the change was effective immediately.
As for the full 55 million,
The department said it was looking for indicators of ineligibility, including people staying past the authorized timeframe outlined in a visa, criminal activity, threats to public safety, engaging in any form of terrorist activity or providing support to a terrorist organization.
I’m sure the lawsuits are already being drafted.
JOHN adds: The truck driver provision is a response to this story, about which we may not have written. In Florida, an illegal immigrant who didn’t speak English and couldn’t read road signs, but somehow got hired as a truck driver, killed three people when he made an illegal u-turn, causing his semi to jackknife.
I don’t suppose they covered the story in the New York Times.
