(LifeSiteNews) — The family of an Ontario teenager who died of an infection after a chemical abortion is seeking accountability from the medical system.
Over two years after her death, the family of Rheanna Laderoute is still pursuing justice after their 19-year-old daughter died of an infection at the Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket, Ontario after a chemical abortion, according to a report by The Globe and Mail.
In January 2022, Laderoute travelled an hour from her home to the women’s health clinic in Brampton, Ontario, after learning that she was pregnant. There, she was prescribed Mifegymiso abortion pills.
During a chemical abortion using Mifegymiso, the pregnant mother first takes a tablet of the drug mifepristone. This drug blocks the mother’s progesterone, a hormone needed to sustain the tiny new life attached to her uterine wall.
Without progesterone, the mother’s pregnancy-sustaining mechanism shuts down, killing the baby. Some 24-48 hours later, the woman orally ingests a tablet of misoprostol, which initiates powerful uterine contractions that cause the woman to bleed heavily as she expels her dead baby.
However, two weeks after her abortion, Laderoute was still suffering heavy bleeding and abdominal pain. As a result, on February 14, she went to the Newmarket’s Southlake Regional Health Centre emergency room.
Over the next 10 days, Laderoute experienced complications from an infection due to her abortion, with signs of sepsis that her family says were not adequately addressed during her three visits to Southlake’s emergency department.
On February 24, she tragically passed away at only 19 years old. According to her family, medical records indicate that nurses urged for her transfer to the ICU, but delays and missed red flags, including the absence of a pelvic exam or gynecologist consultation until she was unconscious, contributed to her deteriorating condition.
Two investigations by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario highlighted missed warning signs and inadequate care, with one doctor involved, Marko Duic, having a prior history of professional concerns.
Her sister, Kassandra, has been vocal about the systemic failures in Rheanna’s care, advocating for accountability and better sepsis awareness to prevent similar tragedies.
Unfortunately, Laderoute is not the only woman to die after taking abortion pills. While the drugs are touted as a “safe” and easy way to kill unborn babies, recently revealed data has shown that over 100 Canadian women have been severely harmed by the abortion pill protocol since 2017.
In fact, according to Canada’s adverse reaction online database, another 19-year-old, along with her baby, tragically died in the wake of using the deadly pills in 2022.
Abortion pills can also lead to various complications and are especially dangerous in ectopic pregnancy.
Surprisingly, abortion pill vendors are not required by law to give women any in-person evaluation or ultrasound as a safeguard to diagnose an ectopic pregnancy before giving out the abortion pill.
