Foreign Office issues urgent travel advice after devastating plane crash in India | UK | News

The Foreign Office has issued advice to all the Brits travelling to India after an Air India plane to London carrying 242 passengers crashed in Ahmedabad, India. According to Air India, there were 53 British nationals on the flights, 169 Indian nationals, 1 Canadian, and 7 Portuguese nationals.

The Foreign Office said in a statement: “We are aware of a plane crash in Ahmedabad. The UK is working with local authorities in India to urgently establish the facts and provide support to those involved. British nationals who require consular assistance or have concerns about friends or family should call 020 7008 5000.”

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner flight met a tragic fate, crashing into a residential area in Meghani Nagar just minutes after departing from Ahmedabad at 1.38pm on June 12, 2025.

Air India said in a statement: “Air India confirms that flight AI171, from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, was involved in an accident today after take-off.

“The flight, which departed from Ahmedabad at 1338 hrs, was carrying 242 passengers and crew members on board the Boeing 787-8 aircraft. Of these, 169 are Indian nationals, 53 are British nationals, 1 Canadian national and 7 Portuguese nationals. The injured are being taken to the nearest hospitals.

“We have also set up a dedicated passenger hotline number 1800 5691 444 to provide more information. Air India is giving its full cooperation to the authorities investigating this incident.”

The disaster struck roughly five minutes into the journey, with Captain Sumit Sabharwal at the helm and Clive Kunder as co-pilot.

Commons Leader Lucy Powell said that the UK Government said that it will provide “all the support that it can” to those on the Air India flight bound for Gatwick Airport which crashed shortly after take off,

Reacting to the incident, Kemi Badenoch posted on X: “Heartbreaking news from Ahmedabad. My thoughts are with all those affected — especially the families of those on board, and the emergency teams responding to what appears to be a horrifying tragedy.”
