Funny, You Don’t Look Like a Mohamed

When I was growing up in South Dakota, the major media organization was KELO, out of Sioux Falls. KELO had both television and radio stations, and they are still big. The Big Sioux River Valley is sometimes referred to as “KELO Land.” It’s like Kello, rhymes with jello.

This is from KELO’s web site, posted earlier today. It is prominent on X:

The story is illustrated with a picture of a police officer arresting a suspect. A normal reader would probably assume that it is a photo of the perp in the story–Mohamed Mansarry–being arrested. Only, it isn’t:

They wouldn’t want readers to get the wrong–i.e., right–idea.

This is a humorous instance that might even have been inadvertent, but it typifies a great deal of today’s media landscape: forget the facts, advance the narrative.
